Technical firewalls and AI-driven defenses are only as strong as the people who operate them. In CyberCube Episode 4, Dr. Salah Khalifa AlBenJasim joins the conversation to discuss why traditional cybersecurity awareness is failing and how organizations can transition toward a true “Security Culture.”

1. The Expiration Date of Awareness

Dr. AlBenJasim highlights a major challenge: hackers innovate faster than awareness programs can keep up. By the time a “newsletter” about a specific scam is sent out, attackers have already moved on to a new tactic.

  • The Solution: Continuous, agile updates. Awareness cannot be a quarterly event; it must be a persistent presence that evolves with the threat landscape.

2. Ditching the “Newsletter”: The Rise of Interactive Training

Traditional methods like posters and long emails are no longer effective. People are suffering from “information fatigue.” To capture attention, Dr. AlBenJasim advocates for modern, engaging methods:

  • Gamification: Turning security lessons into games or competitions.
  • Micro-Learning: Short films, cartoons, and interactive social media posts that deliver “bite-sized” lessons.
  • Simulation: Creating environments where users can experience a threat in a safe, controlled way.

3. Changing Behavior, Not Just Knowledge

There is a fundamental difference between “knowing” and “doing.” Dr. AlBenJasim uses the analogy of a speed limit sign:

Seeing a sign that says “80km/h” is awareness. Actually slowing down is behavioral change. When the entire community slows down as a standard, you have created a culture.

The ultimate goal of cybersecurity training is to change the default behavior of every employee so that security becomes an instinct, not a chore.

4. Level-Based Training: One Size Fits None

A common corporate mistake is sending the same training video to the entire company. Dr. AlBenJasim emphasizes the need for tailored tracks:

  • Senior Leadership: Focused on strategic risk, cost reduction, and business continuity.
  • Technical Staff: Focused on operational security, secure coding, and cloud architecture.
  • General Users: Focused on social engineering, password hygiene, and phishing detection.
