The Looming “Q-Day”

Most cybersecurity strategies are built to fight today’s hackers. But a new era is approaching: the era of Quantum Computing. In the premiere of the CyberCube series by NCSC Bahrain, Mohammed Aboul-Magd (VP of Product at SandboxAQ) warns that while quantum computers offer revolutionary benefits, they also pose an existential threat to modern encryption.

1. Decoding Quantum: It’s Not Just a Faster Computer

To understand the risk, we must first understand the technology. Unlike classical computers that use bits (0 or 1), quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously.

  • Quantum Sensing: Surprisingly, we already use this! It’s the tech behind MRI machines.
  • Quantum Computing: This is the game-changer. It will allow us to solve mathematical problems that would take a classical computer millions of years to crack.

2. The Threat: “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later”

The biggest misconception is that we don’t need to worry until a “perfect” quantum computer exists. Aboul-Magd highlights a critical strategy used by attackers today: SNDL (Store Now, Decrypt Later).

Adversaries are currently stealing and storing vast amounts of encrypted national and corporate data. They can’t read it today, but they are betting that in 5–10 years, they will have the quantum power to unlock it.

3. Bahrain’s Proactive Stance: Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC)

Bahrain isn’t waiting for “Q-Day.” The NCSC is already working on transitioning to Post-Quantum Cryptography. This involves upgrading the mathematical “locks” on our data to new algorithms that are resistant to quantum attacks.

  • Agility is Key: Systems must be “cryptographically agile,” meaning they can swap out old encryption for new ones without rebuilding the entire infrastructure.
  • National Partnership: The partnership between Bahrain’s government and SandboxAQ aims to secure over 60 ministry environments, making Bahrain one of the first countries to operationalize PQC at scale.

4. Can We Trust Quantum AI Companies?

Working with advanced AI firms requires a high degree of trust. Aboul-Magd clarifies that security-first companies like SandboxAQ use a “Metadata-Only” approach. They manage the security of the keys and certificates but never actually see or store the sensitive data themselves.
